And finally, here’s one of my favorite paragraphs about writing:

“This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage them with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums. The crash of the cymbals – sounds that say listen to this, it is important.”

Resource Thursday: Social Media Navigation & Marketing #writingtips #writing

Today we’re going to talk about social media. UGH.

Really. Just…ugh.

It’s a necessary evil, and even entertaining a lot of the time, but the truth is it takes time and energy and focus that you’d really rather be putting toward your writing, if you had your ‘druthers. Still, there are great tools out there that help you build and engage with your audience, and you’re a fool if you don’t take advantage of them.

Here are a few resources that have really helped me as I navigate my way through the social media maze:

The Social Media Cheat Sheet – INCREDIBLY helpful guide to picture sizes and formatting constraints on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

5 Low-Cost Social Media Marketing Strategies for Authors – Great if you don’t have a lot of money to throw at a marketing program.

102 Hashtags Smart Writers Are Using – I started using some of these faithfully and doubled my Twitter following with people solidly in my target demographic very quickly.

17 Tools That’ll Take Your Social Media Marketing To The Next Level –  A list of various downloads and apps that can help you with content and scheduling.

Dan Pearce’s 100 Blogging Tips Dan is a blogger with a strong viral presence, and his tips are spot-on if you want to build and engaging blog.

Now go forth and be retweeted, reblogged, liked, pinned, hashtagged and hopefully…read!

Resource Thursday: NaNo Madness? Bring On The Generators! #amwriting #NaNoWriMo

write

I will admit here and now that I haven’t used a generator…yet.

But I was clued into these by a writer friend and as I’ve done my research it turns out a lot of writers love generators – not to give them the exact idea, mind you, but as a good jumping off point. I have to admit as I perused these lists, I got some flickers of inspiration and ended up jotting down a half-dozen story and character ideas.

So here’s a list of several character, plot and content device generators that you might find enlightening: Continue reading

Resource Thursday: Write The Right Words, Find The Right Structure

write

Writing is a struggle about finding the right word. Or string of words. You need to be able to convey, to describe, to paint, and do it all in as few unnecessary words as possible. Which is a whole lot easier than it sounds, believe me. So I’ve used these two, on occasion – and they do help:

The Wheel of Emotional Description

100 Ways To Say “Said” (and use this one sparingly – “Said” is still the best way to say something, but when you need occasional umph, another word may do better).

Then you have to put the words into some sort of structure. Here are three references that I’ve skimmed and gleaned from and applied in various ways: Continue reading

Resource Thursday: Are You Gearing Up For NaNoWriMo? Here’s Some Great Writing Advice! #amwriting #nanawrimo

nano

This will be the first year I haven’t entered NaNoWriMo in a long, long time. Why? Because a book I started as a NaNo Project finally landed me a bona-fide book deal with a “Big 5” publisher, that’s why – so I am living proof that You. Can. Do. This.

In my resource collection I have a file of stuff I use to motivate me before NaNo starts every year, so I’m going to share them with you:

  1. Pixar’s 22 Rules to Phenomenal Storytelling – These are outstanding, and rule #4 is the rough outline for every single book I’ve ever written.
  2. Chuck Wendig on How to Push Past the Bullshit and Write That Goddamn Novel
  3. 22 Lessons from Stephen King on How to be a Great Writer
  4. 10 Writing Tips to Make Your Editor’s Life Easier
  5. Joss Whedon: 5 Things Your Script Has to Have (this goes for fiction, too)

Hope those help – and good luck to everyone!

Now here’s my sage advice:

FINISH THAT BOOK. JUST WRITE AND FINISH THAT DAMN BOOK.
