Chell at LoveReadingLaughing just finished reading Eight Nights At Sea, and had this to say about it:

This Love Story Is So Softly Mystical. The Details Wrap Around Your Heart And Pull You In. Zephyr And Rina Dance Around Loving Each Other So Well, The Twists And Turns I Never Saw Coming. Rina’s Secret Is So Well Entwined Into The Story I Forgot She Wasn’t Who I Thought She Was (You’ll Understand That Sentence Later, I’m Not Spoiling That One For You!).  Rina And Zephyr Are Not Your Typical Lovers And It Is Amazing. I Found My Self Reading Parts To My Husband Just To Share With Someone Because I Couldn’t Hold My Thoughts In. Eight Nights At Sea Are Not Enough, Britt–We Need Aven’s Story Asap, Please.

If You Love A Good Pirate, Or If Even If You Don’t–This Story Is So Magical It Will Make Your Heart Spin.

That Great Fist-Punching Moment When Your Plot Takes A Twist You Didn’t Anticipate

dub2_Cov

I’m winding up my work on Someday In Dublin, and doing a few chapter reworks, when all of a sudden, one of the major twists in my plot suddenly branched off and became this whole other thing that added an entirely new layer of depth between these two people and oh, holy cow was it amazing when it hit me.

I actually jumped back and shouted “Yeah!” at the top of my lungs, startling a cat and nearly burning myself because I was cooking dinner at the time the inspiration hit.

You don’t always get a fist-pumping moment like that as a writer. Despite the romance of the written word, part of the time the story flows and a lot of the time you’re just slogging along, putting words down, ripping words out, rearranging words, and doing it all one-handed because your other hand is tearing your hair out.

But this time? This time it was right. It was perfect. Yes.

So that’s my big happy for this week. Now here’s yours: Today is your final day to get Eight Nights At Sea at a discount! The Kindle Countdown Deal ends tonight at midnight EDT (US) so get it while you can!!

The Fine Line Of Classifying Your Book

purple

I’m having a real problem with my books.

Here’s the deal. I write books that have to be classified as “erotic” because they contain descriptive sex. That’s the way publishing platforms work and I get that. You don’t want some twelve year old picking up a book with detailed sexual content (though they can find that in fanfic all over the net anytime they want…so go figure).

At the same time, the advent of indie publishing opened the doors for a whole lot of people who write hardcore erotica, and quite a bit of it is just porn scenes with a plot haphazardly slapped around it. There’s also a lot of “outside the mainstream m/f romance model” stuff involving same sex couples, group scenes, BDSM, fetishes….the list is endless. And when you mix in fantasy/paranormal, you don’t even have to be having sex with people anymore. Continue reading

Book Tease: Eight Nights At Sea Steams The Sails

eightnightsatsea2500 (1)

Eight Nights At Sea is such a love child for me.

As some of you know, it began as a Fanfic – the only fanfic I ever novelized, as a matter of fact, and it was also my very first foray into Fanfiction.

I’d read plenty of bad fanfic and the occasional good one across the years, but never had the urge to write any myself until one day, a story crept into my head and just wouldn’t leave. It featured a favorite character from a favorite show (Hook from Once Upon A Time, of course), but I was hesitant to try it as a fanfic because I paired him up with a brand new character of my own instead of Emma, his traditional love interest on the show.

I finally decided I had to write the damn story just for me, if no one else, and I opened an account at Fanfiction.net and started posting it as it leaked out of my brain. It was surprisingly well-received, and got a few hundred good reviews, which inspired me onto my next tale, a purely Captain Swan adventure that got me some more traction in the community and led me to keep going in fanfic, which inspired me to write a few novels, and yadda yadda yadda, here I am actually making money on Amazon and Smashwords from my loyal readers that followed me out of Fanfiction and into the worlds I created.

But I’ll always have a soft spot for this book. Always. The story ended up being so much more than I originally intended, and taught me a lesson about endless possibilities in storyline, and how good it is to surprise yourself as an author.

So with all that backdrop, here’s a tease of what you’ll find in Eight Nights At Sea. In this scene, Rina breaks into the rum, and nearly makes a confession that Zeph has been waiting to hear… Continue reading

I’m Still In The Mood To Tease! Here’s A Bit Of “Eight Nights At Sea”

I think I’ll continue teasing you a bit (we all love a good tease, don’t we?). This time, you get a small taste of “Eight Nights At Sea. Here we get to know Zephyr and Rina as they declare a truce after a particularly fiery (and steamy) encounter involving a tossed-up skirt and a bushel of apples.

Making A Fanfic Into A Novel – It’s More Work Than You Think

If any of you are followers of my fanfiction, you know that I pulled one of my fics and reworked it a few months back into the novel “Eight Nights At Sea.”

eightnightsatsea2500 (1)

I thought to myself at the time, “Well, this will be a piece of cake. I just have to change some names and tweak it a little…”

Nope.

First of all, changing names is harder than you think. You can do a search in word and replace, but if you’ve got a name that carries the same letters as a common word, you’re really going to have fun. And don’t forget places where you may have bastardized the name – for instance, in one sentence I had the girl drunkenly singing the hero’s name, and therefore I hyphenated it to stretch it out for effect. Guess what I missed on the first upload and a reader caught for me. Yup!

Then there are things that are particular to your character that you might need to weed out – some because they’re just way too associated with a popular TV character (for instance, my novel pirate doesn’t have a hook replacing his hand, of course) and some you need to weed out because they don’t make a lot of sense outside the TV or Movie universe they were originally set in.
