Music To My Ears: “My Hairdresser Reads All Your Stuff!” #amwriting #romance

I was chatting with an old friend from high school over the weekend, and she mentioned that she just bought a copy of Windsinger and couldn’t wait to read it. I thanked her, of course, and she dropped another bit of happy into my lap:

“My hairdresser reads all your stuff!” she said. Apparently, she’d mentioned to the girl that I write romance (among other things) and the girl looked me up, and has bought everything I’ve ever written. She especially loved The Seeder Saga and was eagerly awaiting the first book of the Elemental Destinies.

So there you have it. A hairdresser in a very small town in the desert southwest reads me. And I couldn’t be happier.

Readers, I love you. I don’t remember to say that often enough, but really, I do. It’s not really about the money – because, let’s face it, I’m self-pubbed and while I do all right, I’m not laying around on my yacht eating caviar as I tap away at my keyboard, here.

The fact is, I write stories I love, and it’s just so incredibly validating when one of you loves them, too. So thank you. Really. From the bottom of my hopeless romantic heart.

Thank you for reading, thank you for buying, thank you for believing in me.

Theme: Dialogue

Rolfe leaned in close, holding the cutlass up in front of Zeph’s face. “You won’t mind if I borrow this, will you? I do so enjoy a good disembowelment. Once I slice you open with your own blade, I can pull out your entrails and show them to you. Always good for a laugh.”

In Honor Of The New Seeder Complete Edition Release – Here’s An Excerpt From “Changeling” #FridayReads

In the third book of The Seeder Saga, Changeling, Lizzie finds herself kidnapped by a handsome alien by the name of Indar. Indar is a Seeder, a group of people responsible for “seeding” mankind onto various planets throughout the galaxy. He took Lizzie away from Earth for her own good, but she’s not seeing it that way yet.

In this scene, Indar’s getting in his regular workout aboard the ship, and invites Lizzie to join him…. Continue reading

Sometimes Writing Good Sex Means Not Writing Sex At All

One of the things I learned early on when writing romance (and after having read many, many good romance stories) is the judicious use of the sex act.

That’s partly what sets erotica apart from romance as well – erotica spells it all out to the nth degree because that nth degree is really the entire point of the book. A good romance (either in a romance novel or as a story arc in a book of another genre) might show you characters making the beast with two backs, but having it spelled out every single time actually detracts from the real goal: showing a growing relationship.

There are many ways to show that your characters are having great sex without them having great sex. For instance, in Someday In Dublin, my characters Michael and Amy have been happily shagging each other across two continents. It was time to move onto something more important, but it didn’t make sense for them to be in a hotel room and not taking advantage of that. So I wrote this scene: Continue reading

WINDSINGER Launches Tomorrow! By Request: Author Q & A!!

Several of you have reached out either by email, DM or comments on fics and posts to ask me about Windsinger (and the rest of the series), so here ya go!!

Q: Where did you get the idea for Windsinger?

A: This actually came from a short story I wrote a few years back. I was in a writing contest and I really wanted to push my boundaries. I decided to write a short horror piece just to see if I could. In the story, the main character had much the same gift as Cecy (I’m not giving it away) but he didn’t use it as altruistically. He was a selfish, creepy old guy. Anyway, I thought it was a great premise for a novel – this ability, and since this involved air specifically, I started thinking about all the basic elements. And then I wondered how “singers” would present themselves in each of the elements.

Q: Are you introducing all the characters from the series in this book? Continue reading
