FanFiction Friday! Here’s A Chapter From “These Dreams”

In my Once Upon A Time Fanfic, “These Dreams,” Emma gets pulled into the dreamscape by an evil wizard, and Killian voluntarily goes under a sleeping curse to get to her. Together they fall in and out of their own dreams, and the dreams of everyone in Storybrooke. This was, hands-down, one of my favorite fanfics to write, and I’m currently working on a sequel!

In this chapter, Emma has just realized that she’s aboard a ship, but still has no idea she’s trapped in a dream – Killian’s dream. Killian’s very naughty dream…

Sometimes, You Just Have To Walk The Hell Away

JK Rowling once gave out a sterling piece of writing advice. She said that sometimes, you just have to put your project down for a little while and spend some time living your life.

I think that’s why I always have so many books going at once. I get burned out just hammering away at one incessantly, so I bounce around and work on several. The problem with that strategy is, of course, that frequently I have a half-dozen half-finished novels and no completed product for my efforts. Continue reading →

Why Novellas When I’m Already Writing Novels? #amwritingfantasy

As I’ve mentioned before, my new novella, “Captured By The Hunter” will be out tomorrow! I have to tell you that I loved the hell out of this one. Jodan was tremendous fun to write, and the dynamic between these two…whoo baby. When you add in Sci-Fi or Fantasy, sex can go all kinds of fun places.

This is one of my longer novellas, and I briefly toyed with the idea of making it a full-on novel, but in the end, it just wasn’t going to happen. I have (and I’m not kidding) NINE books on horizon. I’m finishing up Somewhere In Dublin, then I’ve got a four part fantasy romance series waiting in the wings. I’m also working on a non-fiction book, parts two and three of a YA series and another YA novel under my other pen name. Adding yet another novel onto the pile (especially when I really, really wanted to write this story NOW) just wasn’t going to fly.

So you get a more condensed (and intense) version, and new readers get a glimpse of where I go when I get to build the universe my characters live in.

I call that a win/win.

FanFiction Friday! Here’s An Excerpt From “Adrift”

It’s FanFiction Friday, me hearties! Time for a chunk of steamy fanfic, served with a side of saucy pirate! In “Adrift”, Emma and Killian are thrown into an alternate reality by a wicked curse, sending Killian back to his villainous days as Captain Hook, only with an even darker heart because he thought he’d been the cause of Emma’s death.

When she shows up in the middle of his ship, it’s up to her to help him find his inner hero – a task that seems insurmountable in some ways.

That Great Fist-Punching Moment When Your Plot Takes A Twist You Didn’t Anticipate

I’m winding up my work on Someday In Dublin, and doing a few chapter reworks, when all of a sudden, one of the major twists in my plot suddenly branched off and became this whole other thing that added an entirely new layer of depth between these two people and oh, holy cow was it amazing when it hit me.

I actually jumped back and shouted “Yeah!” at the top of my lungs, startling a cat and nearly burning myself because I was cooking dinner at the time the inspiration hit.

You don’t always get a fist-pumping moment like that as a writer. Despite the romance of the written word, part of the time the story flows and a lot of the time you’re just slogging along, putting words down, ripping words out, rearranging words, and doing it all one-handed because your other hand is tearing your hair out.

But this time? This time it was right. It was perfect. Yes.
